Jamie’s new album has been on my ear for quite a few days now. I even think I might I have been trying, by all means, to impregnate everyone I know with Cullum’s melodies, particularly the ones from The Pursuit, his latest album, launched this past November.
As if that wasn’t enough, I decided to search some “professional” advice, so I started looking up for music reviews related to this album. One thing is the opinion one forms while listening music one likes, other is, having to form an opinion because it’s your job to do it.
Albeit the enlightment which came through music reviews from critiques, for me, Jamie Cullum's new album is somewhat closer to his music tastes (as show in The Mind of Jamie Cullum) than the previous releases. Most of the songs aren’t very much alike, melody wise and even though the recurrent theme is love, it’s almost like Jamie found a way to portray a myriad of love situations, good and bad.
Enough said, I’m no expert and before I say something even more unbecoming… My favourites! =P
Not While I'm Around _ one morning I woke up to this music and it was a true awakening. I’d heard already but only that morning did the lyrics came through. And the melody... the melody. Having not yet seen Sweeney Todd yet (shame on me), this was my first contact with the song. Obviously, later on I had to do my research... But for now, Jamie's version is my favourite xD
Mixtape _ I had to read through at least four reviews about this album before I could find a reference to this song. I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one to hear it. Mixtape is a concept not very common these days (mp3 players and all) still the song mainly goes around the idea that recording a mixed tape is a “blueprint of my soul”… Being quite the music-lover I can relate to the old days (as if I was very old) back when I used to record mixtapes =)
It's not that I don't like the others songs, believe me I do like them all, but these two are probably the ones I listen to the most.
